Joint Base San Antonio unites JBSA-Lackland, JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, JBSA-Randolph, and Camp Bullis under a single installation serving the San Antonio region. Its installations are spread across different sides of the metro, so the area that makes sense for you depends almost entirely on which installation you report to.

Because the installations sit on different sides of the city, commute planning starts with your assignment rather than the metro as a whole. Lackland is on the west side, Fort Sam Houston just north of downtown, Randolph east-northeast near Universal City, and Camp Bullis northwest off Loop 1604. Nail down your duty location first, then work outward to the neighborhoods around it.
Commute times are approximate and change with traffic, construction, gate access, and time of day.
Housing across the metro spans compact central homes, established neighborhoods, and newer master planned communities on the outer ring. The right fit depends on your installation, your commute tolerance, and whether you prefer to live near the base or accept a longer drive for a different part of town.
Visitor access
All JBSA installations control entry to the base. Visitors without a Department of Defense ID must enter through a Visitor Control Center at a main gate to receive a visitor pass.
Gate hours vary by location
Each installation operates multiple gates with different hours. Main gates generally run around the clock, while secondary gates open for peak commute windows. Hours change with construction and operations, so check jbsa.mil before planning a trip.
West San Antonio (Lackland side)
Valley Hi, Heritage, and far-west areas along Highway 90 and Loop 410 keep the drive to Lackland short.
North central (Fort Sam side)
Government Hill and the neighborhoods north of downtown sit closest to Fort Sam Houston.
Northeast corridor (Randolph side)
Universal City, Live Oak, Converse, Schertz, and Cibolo cluster around Randolph and the I-35 and FM 78 corridors.
Northwest corridor (Camp Bullis side)
Northwest San Antonio, Fair Oaks Ranch, and the Boerne corridor follow Loop 1604 and I-10 toward Camp Bullis.
The Pearl District
A walkable former brewery district with restaurants, markets, and greenspace along the river.
San Antonio River Walk
The city's signature stretch of riverfront dining and public space downtown.
Confirm your gaining unit and actual duty location with your orders as soon as possible, since the side of town you live on depends on which installation you report to.
Budget for a cross-town commute if you live far from your assignment, and test the drive at the same time of day you will actually travel.
