The base sits roughly 7 to 11 miles west of downtown San Antonio, reached mainly via Highway 90 (Air Force Highway) and Loop 410. Living on the west or southwest side keeps the commute short, while a cross-town drive from the northeast side can stretch well past 45 minutes in peak traffic.
Commute times are approximate and change with traffic, construction, gate access, and time of day.
West side neighborhoods range from older, established homes to newer master planned communities further out along Highway 90 and the Loop 410 corridor. Common communities families compare on this side include Valley Hi and Heritage close to the base, and far-west development along Potranco and Culebra when new construction matters more than the shortest commute.
What to arrange before you arrive, in rough order of when each piece matters. Timelines vary by assignment, so confirm details with your unit sponsor and your gaining installation.
Orders and reporting
Carry several certified copies of your PCS orders: one for the gate, one for the Military Personnel Flight, and one for the housing office. Your gaining unit's sponsor confirms your exact report location on base.
Household goods
Schedule pickup and delivery dates through the Transportation Office as soon as your move window is set, and ask your sponsor to arrange gate access if your moving crew must deliver on base.
Housing application
Apply for on-base housing through the JBSA housing office as soon as you have orders, since some family quarters have waiting lists. Off-base households can start the west side rental search at the same time and use BAH for the market.
School enrollment
Enroll school-age children with the district serving your new address as early as the district allows, and bring immunization records, birth certificates, and proof of residence.
Tricare and ID cards
Texas is in the TRICARE East region. Update DEERS records and schedule a RAPIDS appointment for new ID cards once you arrive; appointments fill up, so book early and confirm what documents the office requires.
Utility setup
Set up electric, gas, water, and internet service once you have a move-in date. CPS Energy provides San Antonio electric service, and providers vary by address across the surrounding communities.
Vehicle registration
If Texas becomes your legal residence, transfer your driver license and register vehicles within about 30 days of moving. The base vehicle registration office also handles the gate access side for military households.
JBSA-Lackland is the Air Force hub of Joint Base San Antonio and the gateway for enlisted airmen entering the service. The 37th Training Wing, the largest training wing in the U.S. Air Force, runs Basic Military Training for the Air Force, Space Force, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard, and its 737th Training Group graduates tens of thousands of recruits each year. The base also runs technical training for many career fields.
Lackland is home to the 59th Medical Wing, which operates the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, the Department of Defense's largest outpatient ambulatory surgical center, along with clinics that serve trainees. The Inter-American Air Forces Academy and the Defense Language Institute also train international and language students on the installation.
The installation sits on the southwest side of San Antonio, roughly 7 to 11 miles west of downtown, with main entries off Highway 90 and Loop 410. About 24,000 active duty members are assigned to Lackland along with thousands of DoD civilians, contractors, and family members who come onto the base on a typical day.
Communities with practical commutes to the installation, with approximate drive times from each listed area to the gate. Drive times are approximate and shift with traffic, so test the route you will actually travel at the time of day you will travel it.
Valley Hi
The community closest to the Valley Hi Gate, roughly 5 minutes from the base off Loop 410, with established single-family housing.
Heritage and Westover Hills
West side areas along Loop 410 and Highway 90, about 10 minutes from the base, with a mix of established homes and newer builds.
Lackland City area
The area immediately outside the base gates, where the drive to work is shortest and housing spans older homes and small rental properties.
Far-west communities
Newer construction along Potranco, Culebra, and Highway 151, roughly 15 to 25 minutes from the base depending on traffic, where build-to-order inventory is most common.
Which gates to use
The Luke Main Gate on West Military Drive and the Valley Hi Gate off Loop 410 are both open around the clock. Basic Military Training arrivals report most directly through the Valley Hi Gate, while the Visitor Control Center at the Luke gateway handles visitor passes for families.
Traffic patterns
Gate traffic builds before morning duty and again in the late afternoon, and Highway 90 and Loop 410 carry the heaviest volume. Add buffer in the first weeks while you learn your gate's rhythm.
Groceries and shopping
H-E-B stores at Valley Hi Drive and on Marbach Road sit near the base, and the on-base commissary and exchange serve authorized shoppers. Full-size grocery and retail options also cluster along Highway 90, Loop 410, and the Highway 151 corridor.
First days
Check in with your unit sponsor before arrival, confirm gate entry through the Visitor Control Center or your military ID, and give the school, utility companies, and Tricare your new address as soon as housing is set.

Open around the clock, accessed off Loop 410 near Valley Hi Drive and commonly used by Basic Military Training reception traffic.
Medina Gate
Open around the clock on the Medina Base Road side, reached from Highway 90 and South West Military Drive.
McMullen Gate
Open around the clock, accessed off West Military Drive.
Growden Commercial Gate
Designated for RV and commercial traffic, reached from Highway 90 south to Growden Road.
Valley Hi
A southwest-side community close to the base, convenient for a short drive to Lackland gates.
Heritage
An established west-side area near the Loop 410 and Highway 90 corridors.
Far-west communities
Newer building along Potranco, Culebra, and Highway 151 with more new construction and a longer drive back to the base.
Independent west-side coffee shop at 2555 Castroville Rd with espresso drinks, pastries, and breakfast tacos, a short drive from the base off Highway 90.
Castroville Road coffee shops
A few independent shops sit along the Castroville Road corridor. Ask your unit sponsor or neighbors which one they use after you arrive.

On-base Commissary and Exchange
The Lackland Commissary and Exchange serve authorized cardholders on the base.
New arrivals for Basic Military Training usually reach the reception area most directly through the Valley Hi Gate, so plan that route for reporting day.
Weekday gate traffic builds around duty start and end times; add buffer on weekday mornings.
If you are buying around a first assignment, work the timeline back from your technical training or permanent party start date rather than the arrival week.
Coordinate vehicle and moving company access through your unit's point of contact so the pass office has you in the system before the moving truck reaches the gate.
